Stowe, VT Description

Stowe, Vermont is located in north central Vermont about 45 minutes east of Burlington. It is bounded on its west side by the Underhill State Park within the Mt. Mansfield State Forest, and the CC Putnam State Forest to the east. Mount Mansfield, after which the Mt. Mansfield State Forest derives its name, is the highest mountain in the State of Vermont with a peak elivation of 4,393 feet.

Tourism is one of Stowe’s major industires and the town and surrounding area offer visitors numerous things to see and do. Skiers should take note that Stowe is home to the Stowe Mountain Resort and the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum.

By Bus

By Air

The Morrisville-Stowe Airport does not currently have any commercial flights in and out of Stowe. Plans for stage two of the Stowe Aviation/KMVL infrastructure redevelopment program call for an air charter company that will provide access to Stowe from cities such as New York, Boston, Toronto and Washington, DC.

Stowe Performing Arts
Stowe Performing Arts presents three music concert series in a seaon that runs from May into August. They present the Noon Music in May series at the Stowe Community Church, the Music in the Meadow series at the Trapp Family Lodge, and the Gazebo concerts on the lawn of the Helen Day Memorial Building.

Stowe Theatre Guild
A non-profit volunteer theater, the Stowe Theater Guild has been providing live theater since 1957. Their season runs from June through September and performances are held in The Town Hall Theatre in the Ackley Memorial Building.

Hiking

There are numerous places to go hiking in and around Stowe, including:

  • The Long Trail – The 272 mile Long Trail crosses Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak in Stowe. Vermont’s Green Mountain Club is a great source of information on the Long Trail.
  • The Pinnacle Trail – The Pinnacle Trail is a 3.2 mile trail open April through October. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail.
  • The Stowe Land Trust has trails on three properties

    3. Wiessner Woods
  • The Stowe Recreation Path – The Stowe Recreation Path is a 5.3 mile long paved path available year-round for hiking, biking, and cross country skiing.

Of course the place to ski in Stowe is the Stowe Mountain Resort with over 100 trails of downhill skiing. Also within an hour of Stowe are Smugglers’ Notch Resort 20 minutes to the northwest and Sugarbush Resort 50 minutes southwest in Warren, VT.
