Nantucket Beaches

The small Island of Nantucket is home to more than 15 beautiful beaches around the island that range from beaches with calm surf and many amenities making them appropriate for families, to beaches with heavy surf and no facilities. The beaches of Nantucket include:

  • 40th Pole – Located on the north shore on Nantucket Sound. Good family beach.
  • Brant Point – Located on the north shore within an easy walk or bike ride of town. Beach has strong currents and is appropriate for experienced swimmers. The beach is home to the Brant Point Lighthouse.
  • Children’s Beach – Located on the north shore of the island off of Harbor View Way. Excellent beach for families with small children. The beach has food, lifeguards, picnic tables, restrooms and showers. Parks and recreation activities and evening concerts often held in the summer.
  • Cisco Beach – Located on the island’s south shore of Hummock Pond Road. Cisco beach has heavy surf. There is parking and lifeguards are on duty but there are no facilities.
  • Coatue – Located at the end of Wauwinet Road in the Trustees of Reservations’ Coskata-Coatue Wildlife. Public restrooms at the lighthouse in season. Over sand beach sticker required for vehicles.
  • Dionis Beach – On the island’s north shore on the north side of Eel Point Rd. Beach has calm waters making it ideal for families. Facilities include food, and restrooms. Lifeguards are on duty in season and there is parking.
  • Francis St. Beach – North shore of the island within a five minute walk of Maine street. Beach has restrooms, a jungle gym and kayak rentals. There is no lifeguard at this beach.
  • Great Point – Located on the island’s eastern shore, the Great Point Beach is only accessible over-sand via a 4-wheel drive vehicle (permit needed). There are no facilities or lifeguards. The surf is heavy. Worth the trip to see the Great Point Lighthouse.
  • Jetties Beach – Located on the north shore of the island at the end of Surfside Road. The beach amenities include equipment rentals, food, public phones, restrooms, showers. The beach has lifeguards, parking and is handicapped accessible. This is an excellent family beach.
  • Madaket Beach – At the western end of the island’s south shore, Madaket Beach is as far west as you can go on the Island of Nantucket. This makes it an excellent spot to watch sunsets. The beach has heavy surf. There are lifeguards on duty in season and the beach has restrooms and food nearby.
  • Miacomet Beach and Pond – On the south shore at the end of Miacomet Road. The beach has heavy surf so families may prefer the fresh water Miacomet Pond but keep an eye out for snapping turtles. There are no facilities or food service but there are lifeguards on duty in season. There is parking.
  • Nobadeer – Located on the south shore near the airport. The beach has parking but is difficult to access. There are no lifeguards or facilities.
  • Pocomo Beach – On the eastern shore just west of the head of the harbor. Good beach for kids but no lifeguards or facilities.
  • Siasconset / Sconset Beach – On the island’s eastern shore. Surf can be heavy. There is a lifeguard on duty in season and food may be found in nearby Sconset.
  • Steps Beach – On the north shore access to the beach is from Cliff Road and down steep steps from which the beach derives its name. Calm surf and excellent views of Nantucket Sound and Great Point. There are no lifeguards or facilities and little parking.
  • Surfside Beach – On the south shore at the end of Surfside Road. Excellent family beach offering equipment rentals, food, public phones, restrooms, and showers. The beach has parking and is handicapped accessible. Lifeguards are on duty in season.
  • Tom Nevers – On the south shore access to this beach can be difficult. The beach has heavy surf and coarse sand. There are no lifeguards and no facilities.
