Massachusetts College Sports Teams

Family Friendly GraphicThere are many colleges and universities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that compete at the highest level of college sports. Massachusetts has two of New England’s three NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams – the Boston College Eagles and the UMass Minutemen. In addition, there are numerous Division I FCS football teams as well as Division I basketball and hockey teams in Massachusetts.

In addition to that, there are several summer college baseball leagues the field teams in Massachusetts.

AIC Hockey

American International College fields a Division I men’s ice hockey team. The team plays in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The hockey Yellow Jackets play their home games in the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, MA. Their season runs from October into March.


Bentley University Falcons

Bentley University Hockey

Bentley has a men’s hockey team that plays in the Atlantic Hockey Association. They play their home games at the John A. Ryan Skating Arena which is less than ten minutes from the Bentley Waltham, MA campus. The hockey Falcons’ season runs from October into March.

BC Basketball

BC has a Division I men’s basketball team and women’s basketball team. Both teams play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Both the men’s and the women’s basketball teams play their home games in the Conte Forum on the BC campus. Their seasons run from November into March.

Alma mater of Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie, the Boston College Eagles are one of only three NCAA Division I FBS college football teams in New England. The Eagles play in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

BC has been a frequent contender for the ACC championship, and often play in major bowl games after the regular season.

The BC Eagles play their home football games in the 44,500 seat Alumni Stadium located on their Chestnut Hill campus. The football season lasts from September into November, and possibly into January if BC garners a bowl appearance – which is a frequent occurrence.

BC Hockey

Boston College has a men’s and a women’s NCAA Division I hockey program. Both teams play in the Hockey East Conference. Both also play in the annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament in Boston for the right to be crowned the best college hockey team in the city.

Both the men and the women play their home games in the Conte Forum on the BC Chestnut Hill campus. Their seasons run from October into March.

Boston University has both a men’s and a women’s NCAA Division I basketball team. Both play in the America East Conference. Both teams play their home games in the Agganis Arena on Commonwealth Avenue.

The basketball season for both teams runs from November into March.

BU Hockey

BU also has a men’s hockey team and a women’s hockey team. Both play at the NCAA Division I level in the Hockey East Conference. Hockey is also played in BU’s Agganis Arena. Both the men’s and the women’s teams play in the annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament in Boston in February.

The hockey season runs from October into March.

Holy Cross Basketball

The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester fields an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team and women’s basketball team. The basketball Crusaders compete in the Patriot League.

The teams play their home games at the 3,600 seat Hart Recreation Center on the Holy Cross Campus.

The Crusaders basketball season lasts from November to March for both men and women.

Holy Cross Football

Holy Cross fields an NCAA Division I Football Championship Division (FCS, formerly Division I-AA) football team. The football Crusaders compete in the Patriot League.

The Crusaders play their home games at the 23,500 seat Fitton Field on the Holy Cross Campus.

The football season lasts from September into November.

Holy Cross Hockey

Holy Cross has an NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey team. The team plays in the Atlantic Hockey Association, an NCAA Division I hockey only conference.

The hockey team plays their home games at the Hart Recreation Center on the Holy Cross campus in Worcester. Their season runs from October into March.

Harvard Basketball

Harvard has a men’s basketball team as well as a women’s basketball team. Both play in Division I in the Ivy League. Home games are played in the Lavietes Pavilion. Their season runs from November into March.

The Harvard Crimson football team plays Division 1 football in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). They are in the Ivy League Conference along with three other New England teams – Brown, Dartmouth, and Yale.

Playing their first game in 1874, Harvard has always been a contender for the Ivy League Championship.

The Harvard Crimson play their home games at Harvard Stadium at 95 North Harvard Street in Boston. The football season lasts from September to November and consists of ten games, five home and five away. The Crimson do not participate in the FCS championship series.

Harvard Hockey

Harvard has a men’s and a women’s hockey team. They both play at the NCAA Division I level in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Home games are played at the Bright Hockey Center. Both teams also participate in the annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament in February in Boston.

The hockey season runs from October into March.

Northeastern Basketball

Northeastern fields a men’s and a women’s basketball team. Both teams play at the NCAA Division I level in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Men play their home games in Matthews Arena and the women play their home games in the Solomon Court in the Godfrey K. Cabot Physical Education Center.

Both teams have s season that runs from November into March.

Northeastern Hockey

Northeastern has both a men’s and a women’s NCAA Division I hockey team. Both teams play in the Hockey East Conference. Both teams also participate in the annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament in Boston.

The men’s and women’s hockey teams play their home games in Matthews Arena. The ice hockey season runs from October into March.


University of Massachusetts Amherst Minutemen

UMass Basketball

UMass fields a men’s and a women’s basketball team. Both play at the NCAA Division I level in the  Mid-American Conference (MAC). Both teams play their home games in the William D. Mullins Memorial Center. Their seasons run from November into March.

UMass Amherst Football

The Minutemen football team moved to the NCAA Division I FBS level with the 2012 season. They play in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The Minutemen play their home games in the Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

The football season runs from September into into November.

UMass Amherst Hockey

UMass has an NCAA Division I men’s hockey team. They play in the Hockey East Division. Home games are played in the William D. Mullins Memorial Center.

The hockey season for the Minutemen runs from October into March.

UMass Lowell Basketball

In July of 2017 the UMass Lowell basketball teams will move into the NCAA’s Division I in the America East Conference.

UMass Lowell Hockey

UMass Lowell has a men’s Division I hockey team. They Play in the Hockey East Conference. The River Hawks play their home games in the Tsongas Center on the University’s North campus.

The hockey season runs from October into March.


Summer College Baseball

There are three summer college baseball leagues that field teams in New England:

  1. The Cape Cod Baseball League – The Cape Cod Baseball League fields 10 teams on Cape Cod in Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Cotuit, Falmouth, Harwich, Hyannis, Orleans, Wareham, and Yarmouth-Dennis.
  2. Futures Collegiate Baseball League – The Futures Collegiate Baseball League fields five teams in Massachusetts including the Brockton Rox, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, the North Shore Navigators, the Pittsfield Suns, and the Wachusett Dirt Dogs.
  3. New England Collegiate Baseball League – The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) has four summer college baseball teams in Massachusetts including the Holyoke Blue Sox, New Bedford Bay Sox, North Adams Steeplecats, and the Plymouth Pilgrims.
