Maine Sports Teams

There are two hubs for sports in the State of Maine. For professional sports you need to head to Portland where you will find baseball, basketball, and hockey. For NCAA Division 1 college sports it’s Orono and the University of Maine who field teams in basketball, football, and hockey.

Maine Professional Sports Teams

Most of Maine’s professional sports teams are based in Portland with an independent baseball team also based in Old Orchard Beach.


Portland Sea Dogs
The Portland Sea Dogs are a Minor League Baseball team who make Portland, Maine their home. The team has been the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox since their 2003 season. They play in the Eastern League of Minor League Baseball (MiLB).

The Portland Sea Dogs played their first game in 1994. At that time they were an affiliate of the Florida Marlins, an affiliation that lasted through 2002. Portland won their first Eastern League championship in 2006.

The Sea Dogs play their home games in Hadlock Field at 271 Park Avenue in Portland. The stadium has a capacity of 7,368.

The Portland Sea Dogs season runs from early April to early September.

Old Orchard Beach Surge

The Old Orchard Beach Surge are an independent professional baseball team that play in the Empire League. The surge were founded in 2015 when they played in the North Country Baseball League. They moved to the Empire League in 2016 when the NCBL folded.

The Surge play in a The Ball Park in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The Ball Park was formerly the home of the the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in 2011 and the Futures Collegiate Baseball League in 2012 to 2014. The Ball Park has a seating capacity of 6,000.

The Surge’s season is July.

Maine Red Claws

The Maine Red Claws are a minor league basketball team in the NBA Development League. They are affiliated with the Boston Celtics.

The Maine Red Claws were founded in 2009 and played their first season in the 2009/2010 season.

The team plays its home games at the Portland Exposition Building at 239 Park Avenue in Portland. Built in 1914, the Exposition Building is second oldest arena in continuous use in the U.S. The arena seats 3,045 for basketball games.

The Red Claws season runs from mid-November to early April.

Portland Pirates

The Portland Pirates are a minor league hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). They are affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The team was founded in 1975 in Erie, Pennsylvania as the Erie Blades. They played in Erie through 1982. The team merged with the Baltimore Skipjacks for the 1982–83. The Skipjacks moved to Portland to begin play as the Pirates for the 2003/2004 season. In that year they won the Calder Cup Championship.

The Portland Pirates play their home games in the Cumberland County Civic Center at 1 Civic Center Square in Portland. The Civic Center seats 6,733.

The Pirates season runs from early October to mid-April.

Maine College Sports Teams

For NCAA Division 1 College Sports in Maine all roads point to Orono and the University of Maine. The University of Maine fields Division 1 teams in basketball, football, and hockey.

University of Maine Black Bears

University of Maine Basketball

The University of Maine fields both a men’s basketball team and a women’s basketball team. Both play at the NCAA Division 1 level in the America East Conference. Home games are played in the Harold Alfond Sports Arena for both teams.

The basketball season for both teams runs from October into March.

University of Maine Football

The University of Maine Football team plays in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Black Bears football team plays their home games at the Morse Field at Harold Alfond Sports Stadium.

The Black Bears’ football season runs from September into November.

University of Maine Hockey

The University of Maine has both a men’s and a women’s Division 1 ice hockey team. Both teams play in the Hockey East Conference. Both hockey teams skate their home games at the Harold Alfond Sports Arena.

The Hockey season for me starts in October and runs into March. For the women the season starts in late September and runs into early March.
