Massachusetts Winter Festivals and Winter Carnivals

The return of colder weather has us once again thinking of celebrating winter, so we decided to pull the blanket off of the next installment in our series covering winter festivals and carnivals in New England. This time the Bay State is up for the spotlight. Following are upcoming winter carnivals and festivals in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts:

Newport Winter Festival – Newport, RI

If you are looking for a Winter Festival in the Ocean State all signs point to Newport and Newport County. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Newport Winter Festival, a festival that organizers bill as “New England’s Largest Winter Extravaganza“.

The 10-day festival will feature over 150 events throughout the City of Newport and Newport County. It kicks off at 6:30 PM on Friday, February 15, 2013 with a fireworks display over Newport Harbor. The festival runs through Sunday, February 24, 2013. Some key events include:

  • Musical entertainment such as Beatlemania and Draw The Line (The Endorsed Aerosmith Tribute Show)
  • Magic shows
  • Kids events such as a Children’s Fair with Radio Disney, Teddy Bear Story Time, and a Princess Party
  • Cooking contests such as the 18th Annual Samuel Adams Chili Cook-Off and 3rd Annual Chicken Wing Cook-Off
  • Ice sculpting
  • A comedy show
  • The 8th Annual Illuminated Garden at Ballard Park (more on this below)

8th Annual Ballard Park Illuminated Garden

During February school vacation, as part of the Newport Winter Festival, Ballard Park will host its 8th Annual Illuminated Garden February 21 through 23, 2013. The event is free and runs from 6 PM to 9 PM each day and features dazzling lighting exhibits in the trees, on a thirty foot rock wall, in the meadow, and around the vernal pond.

Ballard Park was created in 1990 when Carol C. Ballard donated a 13 acre parcel of land to the City of Newport. The park was cleaned up, and a trail system was created. The Illuminated Garden event in February kicks off a regular series of events at the park.

Vermont Winter Carnivals and Winter Festivals

One of the great things about New Englanders is that we do not just tolerate winter, we actually celebrate it! It is a wonderful and vibrant season like any other season that is full of great outdoor activities as well as wonderful indoor activities. Because of that, we New Englanders celebrate the season with its own carnivals and festivals.

This is the first post in a series highlighting New England’s winter carnivals and festivals. We start in the Green Mountain State, Vermont. January and February is the season to celebrate winter in Vermont. Following are the major winter carnivals and festivals in Vermont for January and February of 2013:

Newport Winter Festival 2012

Save the dates February 17 through 26, 2012 for the 24th annual Newport Winter Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. This week long festival has a little bit of everything for everyone, including:

  • Music – Beatlemania, a Beatles tribute band, and Another Tequila Sunrise, an Eagles Tribute band
  • A Chili Cook- Off
  • A Chicken Wing Competition
  • A Comedy Show
  • A Children’s Fair
  • An Ice Sculpting Demonstration
  • Family Events
  • Festival Day at Easton’s Beach

Dartmouth Winter Carnival 2012

It was first held in 1911 and the 2012 Dartmouth Winter Carnival at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire will be the 101st. The carnival will be held from Thursday, February 9th through Sunday, February 12th and is a much anticipated event both at the college and in the Hanover community.

The carnival will feature:

  • A town wide skating party
  • Horse drawn sleigh rides
  • A polar bear swim
  • Human dogsled races
  • Skiing events
  • . . . and much more . . .
