Antique Car Rally at Old Sturbridge Village

Picture of Two Men Looking at an Antique CarOn Saturday June 13, 2015 Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) will host an antique car rally from 10 AM to 4 PM. The day will feature more than 100 antique cars spanning 50 years of automotive history. Cars at the rally are all from 1946 or before and will include:

  • A 1910 Stanley “Steamer”
  • A 1912 Oakland
  • A 1912 Buick
  • A 1914 Reo
  • A 1922 Hupmobile
  • 1927 and 1931 Chryslers
  • A 1936 Brewster
  • A 1938 Buick
  • A 1940 Chevrolet
  • A 1941 Cadillac
  • Fords from 1913 through the 1930s
  • . . . and more . . .

There will also be a grand procession of the vehicles through the village at 3:30 PM as a highlight to the day.

Christmas by Candlelight Starting Tonight at Old Sturbridge Village

Carolers at OSV Christmas by CandlelightIf you are looking for a magical holiday treat for this Christmas Season look further than Christmas by Candlelight. Christmas by Candlelight kicks off tonight at Old Sturbridge Village. Running Friday and Saturday nights through December 21 (December 5-7, 12-14 and 19-21, 2014), experience Christmas in a 19th century New England village with:

  • Holiday decorations
  • Christmas carolers and local choirs singing classic Christmas songs
  • Horse-drawn winter sleigh rides
  • A crackling bonfire and, of course, fires in the fireplaces of various village buildings
  • Even visit Saint Nick

Make a complete evening of it by including a holiday dinner in the Oliver Wight Tavern. This should be great fun for the entire family.

Veterans Day at Old Sturbridge Village

Celebrate Veterans Day, November 11, 2014, at Old Sturbridge Village. Veterans, active duty military, and their families (up to 6 people) get in for free. Events and displays on tap for Veterans Day include:

  • Firing of vintage firearms
  • Casting of lead musket balls
  • Performances of martial music
  • A display of military uniforms
  • A reenactor portraying an 1812 surgeon from the U.S.S. Constitution
  • Village blacksmiths working on an 18th-century-style cannon
  • . . . and more . . .

It should be a great day for the whole family.

Old Sturbridge Village Evening of Illumination

Picture of a Tabble by CandlelightExperience the magic of Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) by candlelight, lamp light, and firelight as it would have been in the 1800s when OSV hosts their annual Evening of Illumination.

The evening features a guided tour of select buildings around the common where the shops and homes will be lit by candle light, the light of oil lamps, and, of course, the light of a fire in the hearth. Other things to see and experience include:

  • Watch craftsman doing night work in their shops
  • Join in a barn dance
  • Listen to storytelling and music
  • Enjoy light refreshments, mulled cider, and a cash bar at the Bullard Tavern

OSV’s Evening of Illumination will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Tours are every 10 minutes from 6 PM to 7:30 PM and are limited to 15 people.

Harvest Party and Pottery Firing at Old Sturbridge Village

Need some help getting into the spirit of fall? Well let Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) help you out. This Saturday evening (September 27, 2014), Old Sturbridge Village is hosting an evening harvest party and pottery firing. The festivities will include:

  • A bonfire on the Common
  • An old-fashioned barn dance
  • The annual lighting of the Village’s 24-foot-high brick kiln
  • Horse-drawn hayrides
  • Live music including performances by the Old Sturbridge Village Dancers, Quintebrass, the Celtic band Full Gael, and Vic and Sticks
  • Native American storytelling
  • Paths illuminated by lanterns
  • A blazing water fire display on the millpond

In addition, you will be able to see hearth cooking and watch the blacksmith, potter, and tinner at work. There will be food and beverage tents that will offer chili, clam chowder, hamburgers, hot dogs, beer, and other beverages.

What a great way to dive into the fall season! The festivities will run from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Harvest Party tickets are $12 per person and $10 for OSV Members.

Agricultural Exhibition at Old Sturbridge Village

Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) will host an old-fashioned agricultural exhibition this coming weekend – September 13 and 14, 2014. The event should be both educational and great fun for the entire family. Some of the things that you will be able to see, learn, and do include:

  • Attend the agricultural fair highlighting heirloom vegetables
  • Hear tips and tricks for successfully cultivating heirloom vegetables at home
  • Learn to winnow and thresh grain
  • See OSV’s heritage breed farm animals
  • See the submitted items in the home gardening exhibit
  • See the ox-powered cider mill in operation
  • Shell corn
  • Try plowing behind the Village oxen
  • Watch Dairy demonstrations will including milking cows, butter churning, cheese-making, and ice cream making
  • And more. . .

Gardeners are invited to bring their best heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers to be judged by 19th century standards at the Agricultural Fair.

This is a great way to to get into the spirit of fall harvest season.

Celebrate Black History Weekend at Old Sturbridge Village

Visit Old Sturbridge Village June 21 to 2, 2014 to hear uplifting stories from African-American history. Some highlights of Black History Weekend include:

  • Hear stories of an “Amistad” captive and a slave-turned-dressmaker
  • Learn about African oral traditions
  • Meet historians portraying abolitionists Abby Kelly Foster and William Lloyd Garrison
  • Learn the history of the first black public school

Bucket Town: Four Centuries of Toymaking and Coopering in Hingham

Hingham, MA, also known as “Bucket Town” because of its vibrant early New England coopering industry, was also the first and largest community of professional toymakers in America. The new exhibit Four Centuries of Toymaking and Coopering in Hingham will open at Old Sturbridge Village on June 21, 2014 and will showcase a collection of handcrafted toys and woodenware from dozens of master coopers and toymakers from Hingham, Massachusetts.

The exhibit runs from June 21, 2014 through January 18, 2015.

Old Sturbridge Village Music & Art Weekend

Picture of Old Sturbridge Village DancersFather’s Day Weekend (June 14, & 15, 2014) Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) will play host to over 50 singers, dancers, musicians, and artists during their annual Music & Art Weekend. Enjoy the sights and sounds of art and music that was popular in the 19th century. Some of the special treats in store during the weekend include:

  • Learn to play 1830s style tin whistles
  • Hear the OSV antique pipe organ
  • See rare antique instruments
  • See demonstrations of sketching, theorem painting, and botanical watercolors
  • Listen to the Old Sturbridge Village Singers (June 14)
  • See the Old Sturbridge Village Dancers (June 15)
  • Learn 1830s style dancing
  • Hear craftsman Mike Potsaid, maker of antique guitar reproductions, describe how fine stringed instruments are made

Also important to note is that all dads get in for free on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, 2014 – so make a family day of it.

Antique Car and Carriage Rallies

It is time once again for Old Sturbridge Village’s annual Antique Car and Carriage Rallies weekend. This year mark your calendars for June 7 and 8, 2014 for the event which will feature vintage vehicles that span over a hundred years of transportation history. The weekend will feature:

  • An antique car rally on Saturday, (June 7) – This rally will feature cars such as a 1910 Stanley “Steamer”; 1912 Oakland; 1912 Buick; 1914 Reo; 1922 Hupmobile; 1926 Dodge Brothers; 1927 and 1931 Chryslers; 1936 Brewster; 1938 Buick; 1940 Chevrolet; 1941 Cadillac, and many others.
  • An antique carriage rally on Sunday (June 8) – This rally will feature carriages such an 1800s Black Fancy Sunday Doctor’s carriage; Amish pleasure and working carts; Concord buggy; Belmont Trap; and Meadowbrook carriages. And don’t forget the horses. In attendance, to name a few, will be an Arabian; Icelandic pony; Haflinger; Fell Pony; and a variety of miniature horses.

In all, the two days will feature over 100 antique cars and carriages.

Each day’s rally will run from 11 AM to 4 PM. And do not fret about having to attend both days. Those who attend the antique car rally on Saturday can attend the antique carriage rally on Sunday for free.

The event should be great fun for the entire family.
