This is the first in a series of posts about the upcoming maple sugaring season. Yes, we are getting close to that time of year when daytime temperatures go above freezing and nighttime temp’s go below causing the maple sap to run and bringing on the annual onset of maple sugaring season.
Our first event to highlight is Maple Sugar Madness at Prescott Farm in Laconia, NH. On Saturdays from March 1 through March 29, 2014 Prescott Farm will teach you all about the process of obtaining the sap and creating maple syrup. Some of the specific things that this program will teach you include:
- Tree identification skills
- How to find an appropriate tree using measuring tools
- How to tap a tree using historical and modern tools
- The history of maple sugaring
- The science behind the boiling process
As part of the program there will be a 20 minute hike to their sugar house. The programs will be an hour and a half in duration and will commence at 10 AM, Noon, and 2 PM. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (603)366-5695(603)366-5695.
What a great way to connect with an age-old New England Tradition.
