How About Some Dancing or Dinner Theater on Cape Cod?

Promotion for Dinner TheaterAll right. We are approaching the middle of winter so I will give you a pass if you do not immediately think of Cape Cod. But the Cape can be wonderful this time of year. Admittedly there will be no sun bathing, but there is an amazing beauty to the beach and ocean on a winter day. The solitude can be good for the soul too. Also, it’s a great time to look for sea glass – especially after a storm.

If that’s not enough to entice you to the Cape during the winter then the Cape Codder Resort and Spa is doing their part by offering dinner and dancing to a swing band or dinner theater. Coming up for February:

  • February 1, 2014: Stage Door Canteen for dinner and dancing to great live music
  • February 7 and 14, 2014: Bobby Hypno Show
  • February 8: World Gone Crazy Comedy Band where stand-up comedy and live rock & roll song parodies collide
  • February 22: The Raging Parent which is a tribute to the humor and meaning of being a parent

Check out their schedule for all of the shows between now and early May. What a great way to shake off the winter blues…

The Carousel of Light Looks for a Permanent Home on Cape Cod

Picture of a Mother and Baby with a Carousel Horse

Two Happy Carousel Supporters at the May Food Truck Festival Fund Raising Event

A beautiful, hand-carved, carousel is looking for a permanent home on Cape Cod. Currently known as the Carousel of Light, the carousel is the creation of artist/carver Lance Shinkle. Starting in 1988, Lance began the painstaking process of hand carving horses, chariots, ornamental sculptures, as well as painting colorful scenery panels for a carousel. The carousel is done in a nautical theme with sea horses, mermaids and fishing nets in addition to the horses, chariots (which are wheel chair accessible), and sculptures. All of this is placed on top of a vintage 1947 Allan Hershell carousel mechanism with a calliope to provide the music.

The Carousel of Light first operated at the Barnstable County Fair in Falmouth as well as in Mashpee Commons in Hyannis. In 1999 Lance and his Carousel moved to California so that Lance could be with his ailing father. Lance returned to Falmouth in 2009 and the carousel followed him to Falmouth in February of this year.

Enter the Non-Profit Carousel of Light Inc.
Lance has agreed to donate his magnificent work of art to the Carousel of Light Inc. who have made it their mission to find the carousel a permanent home on the Cape with the goal of operating the carousel as much of the year as is economically feasible. Currently, the only way to see the carousel is to view some of the horses that are on display throughout the Town of Falmouth. The plan is to find an interim space to operate the carousel for the summer of 2014 and to find it a permanent home by the spring of 2015.

Donate to Help the Carousel find a Home
The Carousel of Light Inc. is taking donations to help them in their quest to find the carousel a home. You may donate to them on their website.

While not the only carousel on the Cape with hand-carved horses (the carousel at Heritage Museums & Gardens (c. 1911) also has hand-carved wooden horses), the Carousel of Light is the only one hand-carved on the Cape by a resident of the Cape and will be a wonderful family-oriented attraction for Cape Cod residents and visitors when it is up and running in a permanent home.

Mother’s Day Idea – How About a Spa Trip to Cape Cod?

With Mother’s Day fast approaching (May 12, 2013) it is time to start thinking about what you can do to make Mom feel special. Yes, breakfast in bed is a time honored tradition (that usually comes with the work of cleaning up the kitchen for Mom), and there is always a Mother’s Day brunch, lunch, or dinner… But how about doing something extra special and different? How about taking Mom to Cape Cod for a relaxing spa weekend? On Saturday Mom can get pampered while Dad takes the kids off to explore Cape Cod. The family can reconvene for dinner on Saturday, and a nice breakfast or brunch on Sunday followed by some family exploring of the Cape.

Sounds like great fun for the whole family and what a way to make Mom feel special…

To help you plan such a memorable getaway, here are a few select resort / spa destinations on Cape Cod:

Cape Codder Resort & Spa
1225 Iyannough Road
Hyannis, MA 02601

The Cape Codder Resort & Spa is located in the beautiful Cape Cod community of Hyannis. They have a wonderful spa to pamper Mom that offers massages, body treatments, facials, hair salon, waxing services, spray tanning, and much more. In addition they have an indoor wave pool and heated outdoor year-round pool that would be great fun for the entire family.

Some notable attractions in Hyannis for Dad and the kids include the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, and the Toad Hall Classic Sports Car Collection.

The resort will also be serving a special Mother’s Day buffet from 10:30 AM to 3 PM.

Dan’l Webster Inn & Spa
149 Main Street
Historic Sandwich Village, MA 02563

The Dan’l Webster Inn & Spa has 48 exquisitely furnished guest rooms and suites, some suite with fireplaces and whirlpools. To pamper Mom there is the Beach Plum Spa that offers massages, body treatments, facials, hair salon, waxing services, spray tanning, and much more. They even offer services for kids including parent & child massages.

Located in the beautiful Cape Cod community of Sandwich, the Inn is an ideal location from which to explore the Cape for Dad and the kids. You may want to consider checking out Heritage Museum and Gardens with its antique wooden carousel or the Sandwich Glass Museum, both of which are conveniently located close by in Sandwich.

They also have a special Mother’s Day Menu that will be served from 11:30 AM to 6 PM on Mother’s Day.

Red Jacket Beach Resort
1 South Shore Drive
South Yarmouth, MA 02664

Located on a beautiful private ocean beach in South Yarmouth, the 148 room Red Jacket Beach Resort is a perfect Mother’s Day getaway destination. For Mom there is the Spa at Red Jacket Beach. Services they offer include massage therapies, body therapies, facials, nails, and waxing. They even have services for kids. In addition, the resort has a large heated indoor pool as well as two heated outdoor pools. They even have some pet-friendly rooms if you truly want to bring the “whole” family…

Yarmouth is a wonderful location from which to explore the Cape for Dad and the kids (if you can ever get them out of the pool…).

So think about making Mom feel extra special this Mother’s Day with a great family weekend getaway to Cape Cod.

Holiday Strolls on Cape Cod and the Islands

It’s not too early to mark your calendar for the upcoming holiday strolls throughout the Cape and the Islands. The Cape bustles every weekend starting November 23rd, right through to January 1st.

Picture of Carolers

The Nantucket Christmas Stroll (November 30 through December 2, 2012) is a feast for the eyes as the entire main street is alive with color, light, concerts and carolers.

On the mainland, my favorite events include the charming Route 6A strolls of:

  • Brewster (12/01/12 to 12/02/12)
  • Chatham (12/07/12 to 12/08/12)
  • Dennis (12/09/12)
  • Orleans (11/24/12 to 12/31/12)
  • Osterville (12/14/12)
  • Yarmouthport (12/02/12)

All provide free B&B Inn tours (decorated in full holiday spirit), live music, and holiday refreshments. To learn more about holiday festivities on Cape Cod see Christmas on Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce event calendar for December.

Not to be outdone by the Cape and Nantucket, Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard celebrates its annual Christmas in Edgartown the weekend of December 7 to 9, 2012. Enjoy holiday events and shopping and even the 28th annual Great Chowder Contest.

For a great family opportunity, may I also suggest the Enchanted Village weekend specials at the Cape Cod Resort and Spa.

Boston Magazine Rediscovers Cape Cod

This month’s issue (June) of Boston Magazine has a nice article on rediscovering Cape Cod appropriately named “Rediscover the Cape” (by Courtney Hollands, Janelle Nanos, Lindsay Tucker, Sharon Kunz, Naomi Kooker). In it they provide itineraries as well as recommended beaches, restaurants, shopping, and lodging. The article is broken into the sections “Outer Cape”, “Lower Cape”, “Mid-Cape”, and “Upper Cape” allowing you to easily focus in our your favorite part of Cape Cod.

Our only complaint, we wish they had covered the Islands (Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket), too. But maybe there is a “Rediscover the Islands” in the future…

In addition to the special events and getaway packages, visitors can download the “Christmas on Cape Cod Rewards Pass” for special offers and value added “gifts” from participating restaurants, shops and attractions. Visit to download or print the Rewards Pass.

“Cape Cod is offering up a way to spend some time with your family and friends while creating new memories of the Christmas season,” said Wendy Northcross, CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce. “In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we often forget that some time well spent is a gift as well as a beautifully wrapped box. Cape Cod and the islands delivers a more relaxed and interesting way to find those unique gifts and enjoy the slower pace of December by the sea.”
