2015 New England Air Shows

It looks like 2015 is shaping up to be one of the better years for air shows in quite a few for New England. Since the air show season gets started early in in mid-Spring, following are the air shows and air show related events and attractions to help you to plan ahead…

  • May 16 & 17, 2015 – The Great New England Air Show: The Great New England Air Show returns this year to the Westover Air Reserve Base in Westover, MA. Some highlights of the show include: the Blue Angels, the Canadian Snowbirds Jet team, Canadian Forces CF 18 Demo Team and the Geico Skytypers.
  • May 30 & 31, 2015 – Rhode Island National Guard Open House Air Show: The Rhode Island National Guard Open House Air Show will take up residence once again at the Quonset State Airport in North Kingstown, RI.
  • June 13, 2015 – Plainville Wings and Wheels:  The 4th annual fly-in and classic car show Plainville Wings and Wheels will take up residence at Robertson Airport in in Plainville, CT.
  • Labor Day Weekend, 2015 – Great State of Maine Air Show: The Great State of Maine Air Show is planned for Labor Day weekend this year. Watch their web site for more details.

2014 Wings of Freedom Tour Winging Its Way Into New England

Unfortunately, the end of summer is in sight, but that is not completely bad news. As happens every year toward the end of summer, the Collings Foundation‘s Wings of Freedom Tour makes its way back to New England. So aviation buffs take note, the tour will touchdown starting in September. Following is the schedule for the New England portion of the tour:

  • 9/5 to 9/7, 2014 in Oxford, CT at the Waterbury-Oxford Airport
  • 9/12 to 9/14, 2013 in Norwood, MA at the Norwood Memorial Airport
  • 9/17 to 9/19, 2014 in Hyannis, MA at the Barnstable Municipal Airport
  • 9/19 – 9/21, 2014 in Worcester, MA at the Worcester Regional Airport

So if the dearth of air shows the last few years has you down, here is your chance to get a good shot of aviation history as the Collings Foundation brings their P-51, B-17, and B-24 planes to New England for you to see and tour.

2014 New England Air Shows

It looks to be another lean year for air show fans – the lingering hangover from last year’s sequester cuts? There are only two major events taking place in the spring:

As always, you can look for the Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour to make its way into New England in the late summer early fall. Keep on eye on the schedule for exact times and locations.

Also, the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT is a great place to get your aviation fix this spring and summer.

Wings of Freedom Tour Heading into New England in September

At the end of a summer almost bereft of air shows, the Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour will wing its way into the region starting in September.

The Wings of Freedom Tour is a tour of three vintage World War II aircraft – a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-24 Liberator, and a P-51 Mustang. Every year the Collings Foundation, located in Stowe, MA, takes them on a tour of the country and now that tour is making its way back into New England starting at the Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Oxford, CT on September 6 through 8, 2013.

The current New England schedule for the tour is as follows:

  • September 6 to September 8, 2013: Oxford, CT at the Waterbury-Oxford Airport
  • September 9 to September 11, 2013: Pittsfield, MA at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport
  • September 11 to September 13, 2013: Orange, MA at Orange Municipal Airport
  • September 13 to September 15, 2013: Worcester, MA at the Worcester Regional Airport
  • September 16 to September 18, 2013: Manchester, NH at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport
  • September 18 to September 20, 2013: TBD
  • September 20 to September 22, 2013: Beverly, MA at Beverly Municipal Airport
  • September 23 to September 25, 2013: Plymouth at the Plymouth Municipal Airport
  • September 25 to September 27, 2013: Hyannis, MA at Barnstable Municipal Airport

Central Maine Fly-In at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport

For those of you lamenting the dearth of air shows this summer, due in no small part to the Federal Sequester, you may want to take note of an event taking place at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport in Pittsfield, Maine. On Saturday, July 20, 2013 the airport will be hosting the Central Main Fly-In. What will you see at the fly-in:

  • A lot of experimental aircraft
  • Ultralights
  • Powered parachutes
  • Remove controlled aircraft

There will also be airplane rides. This should be great fun for those looking for an aviation fix this summer…

Dates for 2012 Wings of Freedom Tour in New England

It’s late summer with fall just around the corner which means that it is time for the Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour to make its way once again through New England. The New England leg of the 2012 Wings of Freedom Tour first touches down at the Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Oxford, CT on 9/7/2012.

  • 9/10 – 9/12/2012:  Groton/New London Airport, Lanmar Aviation, in Groton, CT
  • 9/12 – 9/14/2012:  Barnstable Municipal Airport, East Ramp, in Hyannis, MA
  • 9/14 – 9/17/2012: Worcester Regional Airport, Main Terminal, in Worcester, MA
  • 9/17 – 9/19/2012: Orange Municipal Airport, Location: Main Ramp, in Orange, MA
  • 9/19 – 9/21/2012: Dillant-Hopkins Airport, Monadnock Aviation, in Keene, NH
  • 9/21 – 9/24/2012: Norwood Memorial Airport, Maine Ramp, in Norwood, MA

The Foundation’s B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and P-51 Mustang will be at all locations. This is great fun for the whole family so mark your calendar for the location nearest you.

100th Anniversary of Marine Aviation in Marblehead, MA

Staying in an air show theme, the 100th Anniversary of Marine Aviation event will take place this week on August 3 and 4, 2012 as part of the Marblehead Maritime Festival. Events include:

  • Marine helicopters on display including a Huey, CH-46, CH-53, a Cobra attack helicopter, and a UH-34
  • Flyovers by an F4U Corsair
  • Flyovers by the “Trojan Horsemen” flying four T-28 post World War II trainers
  • A parade lead by a Marine Color Guard at 10:30 AM on Saturday

Should be fun for the entire family. Remember that this is just the beginning of the Marblehead Maritime Festival which has numerous events (PDF) from August 3 to August 12, 2012.

2012 Great New England Air Show This Weekend in Chicopee, MA

Westover Air Reserve Base will play host to the 2012 edition of the the Great New England Air Show this weekend. The show starts with a Great New England Air Show Kickoff Breakfast at 6:30 AM on Friday, August 3, 2012. After dining and recognition ceremonies there will be a preview of the weekend’s performances. There is a charge of $30 per person for this event.

The air show itself is open to the public at 8:30 AM on Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5, 2012. Admission and parking are free. Aircraft that will be on display include:

  • Vintage
    • AC-47 Gunship
    • B-25 Mitchell
    • C-47 Skytrain
    • P-47 Thunderbolt
  • Modern
    • B-1 Lancer
    • B-52 Stratofortress
    • C-17 Globemaster III
    • F-15 Eagle
    • KC-10 Extender refueling tanker
    • KC-135 Stratotanker
    • UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter

Flybys are scheduled by:

  • B-2 Spirit stealth bomber

2012 New England Air Shows

Always a great summertime activity, air shows are fun for the whole family. Summer 2012 will not disappoint aviation fans with four major air shows taking place in New England. Coming to the region this summer are the USAF Thunderbirds, the US Navy Blue Angels, the US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet Demonstration Team and much more. Here are New England’s 2012 air shows in date order:

Race of the Century this Weekend – Horses, Stage Coaches, Cars, and Airplanes in Races

The Collings Foundation will host its 4th annual Race of the Century this weekend (August 20 & 21, 2011) in Stowe, MA. They bill the event as “an an all out duel of transportation technologies.” The race features competitions between technologies from different eras. Races include:

  • A 1867 Concord Stage Coach against a 1904 Franklin Type A Roadster
  • A horse and cart against a 1906 Stanley Steamer
  • A 1914 Stutz Bearcat against a 1909 Bleriot Type XI Flying Machine
  • A 1937 Offy sprint car against a PT-17 Stearman bi-plane

The Collings Foundation’s collection of classic cars, race cars, military equipment and aircraft will be open for viewing. They will also be offering flights in their T-6 fighter trainer aircraft, PT-17 bi-wing trainer and New Standard bi-wing. Reservations are required for flights.

There is a pre-event party and personal tour of the Foundation’s collection on Friday August 19, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Reservations are necessary for the party. Call 800-568-8924 for party or flight reservations.

Admission is is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 years and younger.

The Collings Foundation is located at 137 Barton Road in Stow, MA.
