Beanpot Time Again

We are headed into the second week of February, which as any Boston hockey fan can tell you, is time for the Beanpot Hockey Tournament. Yes it is time for that annual college hockey tournament which confers the bragging rights to being the best college hockey team in Boston – a pretty significant accomplishment in a city where hockey is so popular.

The Men’s Beanpot Hockey Tournament has been contested since 1952. It pits four college hockey teams against each other:

  • Boston College – the winner of the 2010 Beanpot
  • Boston University – the most Beanpot titles with 29
  • Harvard – the winner of the first Beanpot
  • Northeastern – Looking for their first Beanpot title since 1988

The women’s (yes, in Boston women play hockey, and they do it quite well) Beanpot Hockey Tournament has been contested since 1979. It, too, pits the same four school’s women’s hockey teams against each other:

  • Boston College – whose first of three Beanpot titles came in 2006
  • Boston University – with only one Beanpot title in 1981
  • Harvard – the winner of the 2010 Beanpot
  • Northeastern – the winner of the first women’s Beanpot and the most Beanpot titles with 14

2011 Men’s Beanpot

For the men, round one of the 2011 Beanpot will be held at the TD Garden on February 7. Northeastern will play Harvard at 5 PM, and BU will play BC at 8 PM. The consolation game (losers of round one play each other) will be held on February 14 at 4:30 PM, and the Championship game will be at 7:30 PM.

2011 Women’s Beanpot

For the women, round one of the 2011 Beanpot will be held at Kelley Rink/Conte Forum (Chestnut Hill, MA) on February 8. Harvard will play Northeastern at 5 PM, and BC will play BU at 8 PM. The consolation game (losers of round one play each other) will be held on February 15 at 5 PM, and the Championship game will be at 8 PM.

Spring on the Way?

I have a fire going in the wood stove. It snowed all day yesterday. Right now as I look out we are getting a mix of snow and sleet. The prediction is that this is to last all day…

Against this backdrop comes the news that that venerable groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did not see his shadow today. According to legend, if he sees his shadow there are 6 more weeks of winter on the way. If he does not, spring is on its way.

I have 7 foot piles of snow at the end of my driveway that are going to be there into May regardless of when spring starts.

Do I believe him. No. In some perverse way, since we are threatening to break the all time snow record for the Boston area (102 inches back in 1995/96 – we were at 60+ before is started snowing yesterday…), I kind of want us to keep going. Might as well get it all our of our system in one year…
