Located in Lenox, Massachusetts, the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), and where the BSO’s world-renowned Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship Program welcomes rising, top musicians, conductors, composers, and vocalists of exceptional abilities to take part in intensive and specifically designed workshops, master classes, and concerts. Tanglewood Music Center is also home to the Tanglewood Music Festival – an outdoor concert series that, in addition to featuring the BSO, also hosts other groups.
Originally established as the Berkshire Music Center, the TMC was founded in 1940 by former BSO music director, Serge Koussevitzky. It was his goal to “make it a premier music academy where, with the resources of a great symphony orchestra at their disposal, young musicians would sharpen their skills under the tutelage of Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians and other specially invited artists.” Shortly after its establishment, the Center would become the summer home for the BSO where Koussevitzky would serve as director until one year after his retirement. He was succeeded by other acclaimed directors that include the likes of Charles Munch, Erich Leinsdorf, Seiji Ozawa, Italian conductor, Franco Ferrara, pianist and conductor Leon Fleisher, Ellen Highstein, and James Levine who, today, not only leads the Tanglewood BSO programs but works with student conductors as well.
Three facilities comprise the Tanglewood Music Center which sits on 210 acres, most of which was donated to the BSO by the Tappan family in 1936: the Koussevitzky Music Shed, Seiji Ozawa Hall, and the Aaron Copeland Library.
The Tanglewood Music Festival is a sure thing for any relaxing summer evening. The TMC offers outdoor, on-the-grass seating where you can bring your own chairs or blankets, as well as under-roof seating. There’s something for everyone – from classical concerts to jazz to modern-day. Don’t miss a beat! Be sure to make this top on your list.
