Jackson, NH is a small resort town in the White Mountains just north of North Conway, and a little over three hours by car from Boston, MA. Although a small town with a population of under 1,000, it is a very popular tourist destination. The town has numerous country inns including the Nestlenook Estate and Resort that features Austrian sleigh rides and a Victorian ice skating park on Zamboni groomed Emerald Lake.
There are also two restored old historic grand hotels in Jackson:
- The Eagle Mountain House – The Eagle Mountain House has been welcoming guests since 1879. It is recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in its’ Historic Hotels of America program. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
- The Wentworth – Built in 1869, it evolved into Wentworth Hall in 1882. It too is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Jackson Falls Historic District.
The town is well known for its’ famous covered bridge, and is home to the Black Mountain Ski Area, New Hampshire’s oldest ski area. It is also a short distance from many other major ski areas including Attitash, Mount Cranmore, and Wildcat.
Jackson is also home to New Hampshire’s largest ski touring center – Jackson XC. Jackson XC is a cross country ski trail system that dates from the 19th century. There are 154 km of trails, 91 KM of which are groomed for Nordic skiing aficionados.
For summertime activities, Jackson is surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest and all of its’ available activities. You can visit nearby Glen Ellis Falls or swim, picnic, and sunbathe at the Jackson Falls beside Carter Notch Road. Jackson is only five minutes away from the family-favorite Story Land theme park and 45 minutes from the equally popular Six Gun City theme park in Jefferson, NH. Jackson is also home to the Wentworth Golf Club at Jackson Village, a public par 70 18-hole golf course as well as the Eagle Mountain Golf Club, a par 32 9-hole golf course.
