Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, is situated just 45 miles south of the Canadian border and less than 100 miles south of Montreal. Approximately 300 miles northwest of Boston, Interstate 89 is just outside the city limits. Route 2 is the main east-west route through Burlington, while Route 7 is the main north-south route. The Burlington International Airport offers direct flights to a number of US cities. Bus service is available to Montreal, Boston, and other cities in Vermont. Seasonal ferry service is offered to Fort Kent, New York.

Incorporated as a city in 1865, Burlington’s location on Lake Champlain’s eastern shore enabled it to develop into a busy port of entry and trade center. Steamboats connected passengers and freight to the Rutland & Burlington Railroad and the Vermont Central Railroad, and the city became a prosperous lumbering and manufacturing center during the Victorian era.

Today, Burlington’s economy is driven by a mix of trade, transportation, utilities, and education and health services, yet its Victorian character has been preserved in the heart of downtown. In 2008, a four-block pedestrian mall, The Church Street Marketplace, was named one of America’s “Great Public Spaces” by the American Planning Association, while in 2009, Burlington was called “one of the prettiest cities” by Forbes Magazine. In 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance named Burlington “One of the 10 Best Cities for the Next Decade” based on factors that include economic vitality, innovative thinking and livability.

In addition to city shopping and dining, visitors to Burlington can enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including sailing, kayaking, cycling, golfing, skiing and hiking. Fishing is a popular sport, and Outdoor Life Magazine named Burlington the Bass Fishing Capital of the United States.
